Prostate Health Services in Kuala Lumpur
Assessment and management of prostate enlargement, elevated PSA, prostate cancer, urinary symptoms, and related prostate conditions.
Prostate conditions become increasingly common with age and may affect urinary function, quality of life, and long-term health. Some men seek assessment because of troublesome urinary symptoms, while others are referred following an elevated PSA result, abnormal prostate examination, or concerns raised during health screening.
Not all prostate conditions are cancerous. Benign prostate enlargement, inflammation of the prostate, and age-related changes can produce symptoms or PSA changes that may require further evaluation. Determining the underlying cause often involves a combination of clinical assessment, blood tests, imaging, and selected specialised investigations.
This service area covers the assessment and management of prostate enlargement, elevated PSA, prostate cancer, urinary symptoms related to the prostate, and the range of modern treatment options available for selected conditions.
Conditions Commonly Assessed
Benign Prostate Enlargement (BPH)
Benign enlargement of the prostate is a common cause of urinary symptoms in ageing men. Depending on the degree of enlargement and bladder function, symptoms may include slow urinary flow, hesitancy, urgency, frequency, incomplete emptying, and nocturia.
Elevated PSA
A raised PSA level does not automatically indicate prostate cancer. PSA may be influenced by benign enlargement, inflammation, infection, recent urinary procedures, and other factors. Assessment focuses on understanding the reason for the PSA change and determining whether further investigation is required.
Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer ranges from slow-growing disease that may be monitored safely to more aggressive forms requiring active treatment. Careful risk assessment is important in determining the most appropriate management pathway.
Prostatitis
Inflammation of the prostate may cause pelvic discomfort, urinary symptoms, pain during ejaculation, or recurrent urinary complaints. Symptoms can vary considerably and may sometimes overlap with other prostate conditions.
Assessment & Investigation
The investigation of prostate conditions may involve several steps depending on the clinical situation.
PSA Testing & Risk Assessment
PSA testing remains an important tool in the evaluation of prostate health. Results are interpreted alongside age, prostate size, symptoms, examination findings, family history, and other clinical factors.
Prostate MRI
Multiparametric MRI can provide detailed information about the prostate and may help identify areas requiring further assessment.
Transperineal Prostate Biopsy
When prostate cancer is suspected, a transperineal biopsy may be recommended to obtain tissue samples for diagnosis and risk stratification.
Treatment Approaches
Treatment decisions are guided by the diagnosis, severity of symptoms, cancer risk where applicable, overall health, and individual treatment goals.
Active Surveillance
Selected men with low-risk prostate cancer may be monitored carefully without immediate treatment, while maintaining regular follow-up and reassessment.
Rezūm™ Water Vapour Therapy
Rezūm™ is a minimally invasive treatment option for selected men with symptomatic benign prostate enlargement.
Bipolar Plasma TURP
Bipolar plasma TURP remains an established surgical treatment for men with moderate to severe urinary symptoms caused by prostate enlargement. The procedure removes obstructing prostate tissue to improve urinary flow and bladder emptying.
Robotic Radical Prostatectomy
Robotic-assisted surgery may be considered for selected men with localised prostate cancer requiring surgical treatment.
Focal Therapy
In carefully selected cases, treatment may be directed at the cancerous area of the prostate while preserving untreated prostate tissue.
HIFU & Irreversible Electroporation (IRE)
Selected focal therapy techniques may be considered in appropriate cases after detailed assessment and discussion of potential benefits, limitations, and follow-up requirements.
Radiotherapy Support Procedures
Some men undergoing prostate radiotherapy may be suitable for supportive procedures designed to help reduce radiation exposure to surrounding structures.
Recovery & Rehabilitation
Recovery following prostate cancer treatment may involve urinary, sexual, and functional rehabilitation. Early assessment and appropriate support can play an important role in recovery and quality of life.
