Paediatric Urology Services in Kuala Lumpur
Assessment and management of urinary, kidney, bladder, and genital conditions affecting infants, children, and adolescents.
Children can experience a wide range of urological conditions affecting the kidneys, bladder, urinary tract, and genital organs. Some problems are present from birth, while others develop during childhood.
Many paediatric urological conditions are treatable, particularly when recognised early. Assessment often focuses not only on symptoms, but also on growth, development, urinary function, kidney health, and long-term wellbeing.
This service area covers common paediatric urological conditions and the investigations and procedures that may be used in their management.
Conditions Commonly Assessed
Bedwetting (Nocturnal Enuresis)
Children may continue to wet the bed beyond the expected age of bladder control. Assessment focuses on identifying contributing factors and determining whether further evaluation is required.
Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR)
Vesicoureteral reflux occurs when urine flows backwards from the bladder towards the kidneys. It may increase the risk of urinary tract infections and kidney damage in some children.
Undescended Testis
An undescended testis occurs when one or both testicles fail to move into the scrotum before birth. Early assessment is important because delayed treatment may affect fertility and long-term testicular health.
Recurrent Urinary Tract Infections
Repeated urinary tract infections may indicate an underlying anatomical or functional urinary tract problem requiring further investigation.

Circumcision-Related Conditions
Some children may require assessment for foreskin-related conditions such as pathological phimosis, recurrent balanitis, or urinary difficulties.
Assessment & Investigation
Not every child requires extensive testing. Investigations are selected according to the child’s age, symptoms, examination findings, and suspected diagnosis.
Common investigations may include:
• Urine testing
• Kidney and bladder ultrasound
• Voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG)
• Nuclear medicine kidney scans
• Uroflowmetry
• Urodynamic testing
• Blood tests where appropriate
Procedures Commonly Performed
Not all paediatric urological conditions require surgery. Many children can be managed with observation, medication, bladder training, or monitoring alone.
When intervention is necessary, the goal is usually to protect kidney function, improve urinary drainage, reduce infections, correct developmental abnormalities, or improve long-term urinary and reproductive health.
Deflux® Injection Therapy
Deflux® is a minimally invasive endoscopic treatment that may be considered for selected children with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR). The procedure involves injecting a specialised material near the ureteric opening to help reduce backward flow of urine from the bladder towards the kidneys.
Orchidopexy
Orchidopexy is performed to reposition an undescended testis into the scrotum and secure it in place. Early treatment is generally recommended because prolonged undescended testes may affect fertility potential and increase future health risks.
Circumcision for Medical Indications
Circumcision may be recommended for selected medical conditions affecting the foreskin, such as pathological phimosis, recurrent balanitis, recurrent urinary infections in specific situations, or other foreskin-related problems.
Circumcision is not routinely required for all boys and should be considered according to the underlying clinical condition.
Endoscopic & Minimally Invasive Procedures
Some urinary tract abnormalities can be assessed or treated using specialised endoscopic instruments passed through the natural urinary passage without external incisions. These procedures may be used in selected situations involving urinary obstruction, reflux, bladder abnormalities, or congenital urinary tract conditions.
Reconstructive & Corrective Surgery
A small number of children may require more specialised surgery to address congenital urinary tract abnormalities, obstruction, or structural conditions affecting urinary function. The need for surgery depends on the diagnosis, severity of symptoms, and potential impact on kidney development and long-term health.
