Malaysia’s First Kelly Procedure for Bladder Exstrophy

On 11th August 2025, a surgical team at Prince Court Medical Centre (PCMC) in Kuala Lumpur successfully performed Malaysia’s first Kelly Procedure for bladder exstrophy. This complex operation marks a major step forward for paediatric urology in Malaysia, expanding local expertise in advanced reconstructive surgery and reducing the need for families to travel overseas for care. It also strengthens Malaysia’s position as a regional centre for complex urology.

Dr. Roger Anthony Idi, Consultant Urologist at PCMC, was part of the surgical team together with Prof Imran Mushtaq, a world-renowned paediatric urologist from Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), London. Supported by skilled anaesthetists, nurses, and theatre staff, the collaboration brought global expertise to Malaysia and made this milestone possible.

Most importantly, the surgery represents new hope for children born with bladder exstrophy — offering the possibility of improved bladder function, continence, and a healthier future.

About the Kelly Procedure

The Kelly Procedure is a specialised reconstructive surgery used to treat bladder exstrophy, a rare congenital condition where the bladder develops outside the body.
The operation involves reconstructing the bladder, urinary sphincter, and pelvic structures to protect kidney function and support urinary control.

This highly demanding surgery has only been performed in a few centres worldwide. With the support of international collaboration, PCMC successfully carried out the first Kelly Procedure in Malaysia, marking a new chapter in advanced paediatric urology surgery for the region.
